Insights into Joomla 3.2 - Part 3
It’s nice to have you here (again)! On the second part of this series we talked about the changes and improvements in Joomla User eXperience implemented for Joomla 3.2. On that part we also promised to create this third part that will cater about the intriguing new Joomla “App Store.” Behold Apple fanatics, we (as well as the Joomla Development Team) all know that the name App Store is already owned by Apple Inc. It was just like a model name when the Joomla Team first conceptualized it. In fact, they asked the Joomla open-source community through a blog post, sometime August of 2013, to think of
and provide a name for this new feature.
This new feature is now dubbed as the Joomla Extension Finder (AKA: Install from Web). The alias Install from Web was derived from the name of a newly created tab (seen first in Joomla 3.2) in the Extension Manager’s Install screen that when clicked will lead you to the new feature’s user interface – which is basically the JED (Joomla Extensions Directory) . Its new name perfectly defines its purpose. It’s basically a feature that simplifies finding/installing of Joomla Extensions.
Joomla Extension Finder
Below are the details of this promising new feature that has been added in Joomla 3.2:
- New! Added a new tab in the Extension Manager named “install from web” that when clicked will bring you to Extension Manager Screen that contains featured JED extensions
- It allows you to display JED extensions by categories that you can select/click from the left pane of the UI (User Interface) screen. To name some of the categories are Access & Security, Content Sharing, Directory & Documentation, e-Commerce, etc.
- Alternatively, you can type a keyword or even the name of the extension you are looking for via the search box.
- It allows you to sort the list of the displayed extensions in several ways. It could be sorted by popularity, by name, by rating, newest first, or recently updated.
- Once an extension is selected/clicked, it will provide you the details of that particular extension including but not limited to the following:
- Ratings gained by the extension o Updated version and date of last update
- License type
- Date when the extension was added to the JED
- Link to the Reviews given to the chosen extension
- Link/Button to the Developer’s Website
- Link to the extension’s directory listing
- Lastly but most importantly, the Install Button so as to allow installation of the chosen extension
Indeed, this newest addition to Joomla is a cool and very useful feature. This, in fact, is a time saver and would greatly play a role as Joomla moves forward in conquering the CMS market. Kudos goes to all the contributors of this lovely feature.
Joomla is getting better and better as it upgrades from version to version. Your great Joomla website will get even greater if you have it hosted by the best Joomla Hosting Provider. We know it’s quite hard to find one, but once you do things can be made much more simple for you.
